DB Board and Circuit Breaker Repair in Doha

Power that trips again and again is the DB board doing its job: something on that circuit is wrong. We find the cause, replace worn breakers and upgrade boards that are too small for the load in your home, office or shop.

  • Breakers that trip, buzz or will not reset
  • DB board replacement and upgrades
  • Every circuit tested before we leave

Why Does a Circuit Breaker Keep Tripping?

A breaker trips for one of four reasons: the circuit is overloaded, there is a short circuit, current is leaking to earth, or the breaker itself is worn out. A breaker that trips again straight after a reset has a live fault behind it and should be left off until an electrician has tested the circuit.

The basics

What Is Inside a DB Board?

DB stands for distribution board. It is the box, often near the entrance, where the incoming supply is split into separate circuits. These are its main parts.

Main switch
Cuts the power to every circuit at once. This is the one to switch off in an emergency.
MCB (circuit breaker)
One for each circuit: lights, sockets, the cooker, the water heater, each AC unit. It trips when the circuit draws more current than it should.
ELCB or RCD
Trips when current leaks to earth, for example through damp, a damaged cable or a faulty appliance. It is the device that protects people from electric shock.
Busbar and neutral bar
The metal strips that feed the breakers. Loose screws here cause heat, buzzing and scorch marks.
Circuit labels
They tell you which breaker controls which room. Missing or wrong labels slow down every repair.
Fault finding

Four Reasons a Breaker Trips, and What Fixes Each

Overload

Too many appliances on one circuit, such as a kettle, an oven and a heater on the same sockets. The breaker holds for a while, then trips once things warm up.Fix: move loads to another circuit, or add a new circuit for the heavy appliance.

Short circuit

Live and neutral touch, often inside a damaged flex, a burnt socket or a light fitting. The breaker trips with a snap the moment it is switched on.Fix: find the damaged part and replace it.

Earth leakage

The ELCB trips, sometimes only when one appliance runs, or after rain or floor washing. Water heaters, washing machines and outdoor lights are the usual suspects.Fix: test each circuit and appliance in turn to find the leak.

A worn breaker

Breakers weaken with age and heat. A weak one trips below its rating, feels warm, or will not latch.Fix: replace it with a breaker of the same rating and type.

Repair or replace

Can the DB Board Be Repaired, or Does It Need Replacing?

A repair is usually enough when

  • One breaker is faulty and the rest are sound
  • A connection has worked loose
  • The board still has spare ways for a new circuit
  • The casing and busbar show no heat damage

Replacement makes sense when

  • The board has no ELCB or RCD protection
  • There are scorch marks or melted plastic inside
  • It still uses old rewirable fuses
  • You are adding AC units or a cooker and the board is full
  • Breakers of mixed brands have been forced to fit

How We Replace or Upgrade a DB Board

  1. Survey the load.We list what each circuit feeds and what you plan to add.
  2. Quote in writing. The quote names the board size and the breakers. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.
  3. Agree a shutdown time. The power is off while the board is changed, so we pick a time that suits the household or the shop.
  4. Fit and connect. The new board goes in, each circuit is connected to a breaker of the right rating, and the ways are labelled.
  5. Test every circuit. We check each breaker and the ELCB trip before the power goes back on.
  6. Hand over. You are shown which breaker controls what.

Jobs That Often Come With a DB Board Repair

A tripping breaker points at a fault somewhere on its circuit, so the repair often ends at a socket, a light fitting or a length of cable. If the board is sound and the cable is not, see electrical wiring and rewiring. For everything else our electricians in Doha handle, start at the main page.

FAQ

DB Board and Breaker Questions

What is the difference between an MCB and an ELCB?

An MCB protects the cable: it trips on overload or a short circuit. An ELCB, also called an RCD, protects people: it trips when current leaks to earth. A safe DB board has both.

Why does the ELCB trip when the water heater is on?

The heating element sits in water, and when its coating fails a little current leaks to earth. The ELCB detects that and cuts the power. The heater needs testing, and usually a new element, before it is used again.

Why does the power trip mostly in summer?

In summer every AC unit runs for long hours, so the total load is at its highest and the board runs hot. Breakers that are old, or circuits that were already near their limit, give way first.

How long does it take to replace a DB board?

A like-for-like change in an apartment is often done within a day. A large villa board with many circuits takes longer. The expected shutdown time is given with the written quote.

Can you add a circuit for a new AC unit or cooker?

Yes, if the board has a spare way and the supply can carry the extra load. If the board is full, we quote for a larger board or a second one beside it.

My DB board is buzzing. Is that dangerous?

Yes. Buzzing or crackling means a loose connection is arcing, and that produces heat. Switch off the main switch if you can reach it safely and call our emergency electrician.
