Most of the water damage we are called out to repair in Doha did not come from the leak itself. It came from the hour the leak was left running while somebody looked for a phone number. A burst supply line can put out more water in thirty minutes than a washing machine uses in a week, and gypsum ceilings soak it up quietly until they come down.
So before you call anyone, do these three things.
1. Shut the water off at the main valve
Every villa and apartment in Qatar has a main shut-off valve. Turning it clockwise stops the whole supply, and that single action ends the damage while everything else gets sorted out. The valve is usually in one of these places:
- In the kitchen, under the sink or inside the adjacent cupboard
- On the roof, next to the water tank
- In a service duct on the landing, for apartments
- Near the water meter at the boundary wall, for villas
If the leak is clearly coming from one fixture — a single tap, a toilet, a water heater — there is often a smaller isolation valve on the pipe feeding it. Closing that one keeps the rest of the house in water.
Find it before you need it: Take two minutes this week to locate your main valve and check that it actually turns. A seized valve is a common and unpleasant surprise during an emergency.
2. Keep water away from electricity
If water is running near sockets, a distribution board or light fittings, switch off the affected circuit at the breaker before you start mopping. Do not touch a wet socket or a wet DB board with your hands. If the board itself is wet, leave the room and tell us when you call — that becomes an electrical job as well as a plumbing one.
If you are standing in water and reaching for a switch, stop. Nothing you are protecting is worth that.
3. Photograph everything, then contain it
Photos serve two purposes: your plumber can bring the right parts on the first visit, and your landlord or insurer can see the state of things before anything was moved. Take them before you clean up.
What helps us most
- A wide photo showing where in the room the water is
- A close photo of the pipe, joint or fixture it is coming from
- A photo of your main valve, so we know it is closed
- A short video if the leak is intermittent or you can hear it but not see it
Then put a bucket under the drip, towels around it, and move anything absorbent — rugs, boxes, mattresses — well clear. Water travels along floors much further than people expect.
When it is an emergency
Call immediately, at any hour, if you see water coming through a ceiling, a pipe that has burst rather than dripped, water near the distribution board, or a leak you cannot stop at any valve. Everything else — a slow drip, a running toilet, a damp patch that is not growing — can wait for normal hours and will cost you less.
